Central Hudson Continues to Restore Electrical Service In Wake of Powerful Storm

Intense winds and drenching rains from the powerful storm system that traveled up the east coast overnight impacted the Mid Hudson Valley, knocking down trees and limbs and damaging power equipment. In total, about 28,000 Central Hudson customers lost power over the course of the storm which began on Thursday evening, and repair crews worked through the night and this morning to restore electric service to more than 21,000 customers.
Currently, more than 60 Central Hudson and contractor crews together with about 30 tree trimming crews are addressing approximately 150 individual outages to restore electric service to 6,000 customers remaining without power, primarily in the following areas:

  • Dutchess County: 3,500, including Towns of Clinton, East Fishkill, Hyde Park, LaGrange, Pines Plains, Pleasant Valley, Stanford, and Poughkeepsie City and Town.
  • Greene County: 30
  • Orange County: 50
  • Putnam County: 900, including Village of Cold Spring, and Towns of Nelsonville and Philipstown.
  • Ulster County: 1,600, including Towns of  Denning, Hurley, Marbletown and Saugerties.

Power is expected to be restored to the majority of customers by tonight, and crews will continue to address any remaining outages, expected primarily in Dutchess and Putnam and mostly affecting small groups or single homes, through Saturday morning.
Customers can report their power condition and view outage locations and estimated restoration times, as they become available, on the StormCentral section of www.CentralHudson.com, or by calling (845) 452-2700 or 1-800-527-2714. As a reminder customers should keep safety in mind before and after storms:

Before storms:

  • Pay attention to weather advisories and storm warnings;
  • Have a telephone that does not require an electric outlet to operate;
  • Charge cell phones, or have a car cell phone charger;
  • Keep a flashlight and fresh batteries handy;
  • Have a battery-powered radio to keep informed of restoration efforts;
  • Stock water and packaged or canned foods that do not require refrigeration or cooking. Be sure to have a non-electric can opener;
  • Ensure adequate supplies of prescription medications, cash and other necessities;
  • Ensure vehicles are refueled and in good working condition;
  • Know how to manually open automatic garage doors; and
  • Have a plan to check on vulnerable neighbors or family members.

After storms strike:

  • Keep away from downed power lines;
  • Avoid the use of candles for illumination;
  • Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions on the use of emergency generators, and operating the units outdoors; and
  • Never use outdoor gas or charcoal grills indoors, as they pose a fire hazard and over time can give off deadly carbon monoxide gas. Use these appliances only outdoors with proper ventilation. Similarly, operate cars and motor vehicles outdoors only, and never in the garage.
