Central Hudson crews have begun the process of turning off meters to customers affected by the natural gas service interruption in the City of Kingston. This process will take place tonight and Friday, and utility crews will restore natural gas service, home by home, as soon as possible.

The City of Kingston and the Red Cross have established a warming center at the Midtown Center at 467 Broadway for residents seeking alternate shelter, and should bring their own bedding, medications, toiletries and infant needs. Food and beverages will be provided by the Red Cross and Bruderhof volunteers.

Steps residents can take to keep their homes warm and to protect water lines during the gas interruption include:

• Opening faucets slightly to allow a steady drip or small trickle;
• Open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
• Safely using electric space heaters by ensuring they are not placed near flammable objects, are never left unattended, and the proper outlet and electric cord are used.

Outdoor propane and charcoal grills should not be used to heat indoor spaces, as these pose a fire hazard and may give off deadly carbon monoxide gas. Customers are also reminded to check on elderly or special-needs neighbors, relatives or friends who may also be affected.

Central Hudson is reaching out to affected customers by telephone, and has established an information resource at www.CentralHudson.com. There, a map of the affected area is provided, as well as shelter information, steps on keeping warm and updates as they become available.

Customers are reminded that Central Hudson workers will need access to impacted homes and businesses in order to expedite service restoration; customers are encouraged to provide the utility with a cell phone number or alternate contact information in the event they may not be at home.
